How can we ensure appropriate standards in Australia?

This is perhaps the most challenging and vital step to an Australia wide Vehicle to Grid network. Without standardised processes, technology and policy which is built around our climate, economy and habits, we will surely fail to recognise the sheer potential of V2G.

Which bits need standardisation?

Various electric vehicles will be seen on the market in coming years. Some will be electric vehicle conversions, and others plug in hybrids. There will hopefully also be some impressive 100% electric vehicles hit the new vehicle market in coming years.

The parts that need attention when talking about standardisation include the:

  • electrical socket on the car itself
  • cable that connects the car and the recharge point
  • inverter technology connecting the vehicle to the grid
  • charging cycles and current limitations
  • short circuit, and safety mechanisms
  • wireless transmission standards if employed
